The photon y is the carrier of the electromagnetic force which acts between the positive nucleus and the negative electrons which orbit the nucleus. The z and w bosons are involved in the weak nuclear force.

The weak nuclear force differs from the other forces in that, rather than holding things together, it breaks things apart and is involved in decay. This force works over very short distances.

In 1964, Francis Englert and Peter Higgs separately theorised the Higgs boson H, but it was not until 2013 that physicists at the LHC in Switzerland announced that they had finally found it. The Higgs boson carries the Higgs field, which permeates space and gives atoms of different sizes their mass.
